The center can no longer accept food donations because of so many generous people! They ask that if you still wish to donate that you hold off for a while and contact them later; or you could donate toiletries which they can always use. I'm posting the original article here so you can learn more about how they serve our community.
We need food, Women's Center says
RALEIGH -- The Women's Center of Wake County, which serves homeless and low-income women and children, is in desperate need of food, with just one day's worth of food on hand.
The center's freezer is bare except for a bag of frozen blueberries, said Jean Williams, executive director of the center, which is on Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh.
Resources have been depleted, Williams said, because the center has been overrun by people who need its services. Plus, organizations that supply the center, such as the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina, are low on supplies, too.
Though some think the economy is rebounding, Williams said her organization is seeing an increase in demand for food and services. And that demand is not from those who are chronically homeless or jobless.
"It's people who never thought they'd have to come to us for food," she said.
In 2009, the center served 832 households, including 539 children.
The center is asking Raleigh residents to pick up a few extra items on their next grocery store trip and drop them off at the Women's Center, 128 E. Hargett St., Suite 10.
"Every little bit helps," Williams said.
Deliveries are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you need to have your items picked up, please call the center at 829-3711 to make arrangements.
