Local Event: Shred those Private Papers

From N&O reporter Sue Stock: Free shredding event Saturday...
The Better Business Bureau is hosting its bi-annual "Secure Your ID" event on Saturday, offering area residents the opportunity to shred secure documents.
On Saturday October 23, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., you can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to the Coastal Federal Credit Union at 1000 St. Albans Drive in Raleigh. They will be shredded on the spot.
If you don't have a shredder at home, this is a really good and important way to protect yourself from identity theft. Personally, I do have a shredder at home and I shred everything I do not want to keep that has my name and address on it. That may seem a little extreme, but I figure better safe than sorry.
Recommended items to bring to the shredding event and dispose of safely include:
  • Documents that include Social Security numbers, birthdates, PIN numbers or passwords
  • Banking documents and other financial information
  • Leases, contracts or letters that include signatures
  • Pre-approved credit card applications
  • Medical or dental bills
  • Travel itineraries
  • Used airline tickets

The Women's Center of Wake County

This article was in the April 29th and was posted on a Savvy Dollar forum by RLP2451. We now have an update thanks to the overwhelming response! The center can no longer accept food donations because of so many generous people! They ask that if you still wish to donate that you hold off for a while and contact them later; or you could donate toiletries which they can always use. I'm posting the original article here so you can learn more about how they serve our community.

We need food, Women's Center says

RALEIGH -- The Women's Center of Wake County, which serves homeless and low-income women and children, is in desperate need of food, with just one day's worth of food on hand.

The center's freezer is bare except for a bag of frozen blueberries, said Jean Williams, executive director of the center, which is on Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh.

Resources have been depleted, Williams said, because the center has been overrun by people who need its services. Plus, organizations that supply the center, such as the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina, are low on supplies, too.

Though some think the economy is rebounding, Williams said her organization is seeing an increase in demand for food and services. And that demand is not from those who are chronically homeless or jobless.

"It's people who never thought they'd have to come to us for food," she said.

In 2009, the center served 832 households, including 539 children.

The center is asking Raleigh residents to pick up a few extra items on their next grocery store trip and drop them off at the Women's Center, 128 E. Hargett St., Suite 10.

"Every little bit helps," Williams said.

Deliveries are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you need to have your items picked up, please call the center at 829-3711 to make arrangements.

Event: Artsplosure 2010

How did I forget that Artsplosure - The Raleigh Arts Festival was this weekend? This is something we have participated or volunteered at for many years. We even even got a very colorful magnet in the mail a while  back reminding us of the event! My apologies to Michael Lowder and Terry Dollar who always put on a great event for the city.

Artsplosure will be open today at 1pm, and is located in the historic Moore Square and City Market of downtown. Don't miss Mirazozo by Architects of Air with a cost of only $5 you get to experience "a large scale, inflatable sculpture constructed of translucent vinyl and made up of labyrinthine tunnels and inspiring spacious domes.  A sensual world of liquid light and color, it is a multi-sensory space that welcomes, inspires and affects everyone who enters."

It's official kickoff is tomorrow and runs through Sunday and the event is FREE with the exception of a few special exhibits. They were featured on our local WRAL news program and here is a sneak peak from today.
