NC State Fair & Food Lion Surpass Goal
Food Lion and the NC State Fair passed their goal last Thursday. The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina received 246,779 lbs of food from fairgoers! This was an increase of almost 10,000 pounds over last year setting a new Food Lion Hunger Relief Day collection record! The food donations are equivalent to more than 200,000 meals. According to other record counts, that's equal to 27 African elephants, 20 monster trucks or a Boeing 747!
Thanks to everyone who participated by contributing to this very worthy cause! Enjoy the last day of the fair today, gates close at 11pm.

Charity: Kids Food Basket

Mission: Attacking childhood hunger in Grand Rapids.
We exist to ensure that children in our community don't go to bed hungry.
Childhood hunger hurts. It denies dignity, lessens human energy, erodes community stability and impairs the potential of children to achieve. To break this cycle of hunger, Kids' Food Basket of Grand Rapids is committed to providing healthy, tasty, efficient and cost effective evening meal sack suppers to children who are food insecure.
As a community based volunteer organization, our volunteers, ages 5 to 95, come from all walks of life to give their time, talent and treasure to end hunger among our children. We seek to provide life sustaining meals to those in need and to silence the pain that hunger brings.
What We Are
Kids' Food Basket is a hunger relief agency in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that provides food insecure children an evening meal each weekday at the end of the school day. The children we serve attend schools where 80% or above of students live at or below the poverty level.
Their Snack Sack Project info is a great way to help stop childhood hunger. We recommend and support donations to this effort!

The Women's Center of Wake County
This article was in the April 29th and was posted on a Savvy Dollar forum by RLP2451. We now have an update thanks to the overwhelming response! The center can no longer accept food donations because of so many generous people! They ask that if you still wish to donate that you hold off for a while and contact them later; or you could donate toiletries which they can always use. I'm posting the original article here so you can learn more about how they serve our community.
We need food, Women's Center says
RALEIGH -- The Women's Center of Wake County, which serves homeless and low-income women and children, is in desperate need of food, with just one day's worth of food on hand.
The center's freezer is bare except for a bag of frozen blueberries, said Jean Williams, executive director of the center, which is on Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh.
Resources have been depleted, Williams said, because the center has been overrun by people who need its services. Plus, organizations that supply the center, such as the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina, are low on supplies, too.
Though some think the economy is rebounding, Williams said her organization is seeing an increase in demand for food and services. And that demand is not from those who are chronically homeless or jobless.
"It's people who never thought they'd have to come to us for food," she said.
In 2009, the center served 832 households, including 539 children.
The center is asking Raleigh residents to pick up a few extra items on their next grocery store trip and drop them off at the Women's Center, 128 E. Hargett St., Suite 10.
"Every little bit helps," Williams said.
Deliveries are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you need to have your items picked up, please call the center at 829-3711 to make arrangements.

Disaster Relief: Haiti, July 17 - 24
Twitter friend in my head, Stuart MacDonald has the opportunity to go and lend a hand in Haiti and needs our help! For eight days July 17th - 24th, he and the Victory World Church of Atlanta will be there to help out a group who has been there since the beginning. www.ahomeinhaiti.org and sponsor Shaun King are the folks who have been active and on the ground since the the earthquake hit.
Now for the donation part, his trip is $1,200 and is to include his food, lodging, transportation, flights and security) This is by far not a go over on your own and gawk and the disaster left behind. But he needs help financing the trip and we a FINDaBB plan to make a donation. Keep in mind that this blog is currently not making any money due to it being new and not having a lot of readership. But please if you do get a chance to see this, visit his blog http://www.stuartbmcdonald.com/donate/ for info on him and about this trip. Donations are needed by JULY 7th. I know he will appreciate ANY AMOUNT you can send through paypal. Also, if you'd like to go, contact him. I can't go because of a couple of reasons: 1. I'd be crying too much and 2. I'd try to bring home every one of those little orphans!
