Preparing your Pets for Halloween
Halloween can be a real nightmare for pets. Just imagine trick-or-treating from a pet's point of view. It's an absolute nightmare of doorbells that never stop ringing, loud scary noises in the night and a constant stream of annoying strangers coming into your home.
This can be very stressful and dangerous for pets. And it's our job as good pet parents to be aware of the dangers and to keep our pets safe. Bad things happen to good pets also, pets are often teased, tortured, terrorized and even killed at this time of year.
Veterinary clinics also see a big rise in pet accidents and injuries on Halloween. The most common problems are poisoning, ingestion of foreign bodies, trauma from car accidents and bite wounds. Here are some good tips to keep in mind this Halloween:
1. Hide the candy. Keep all candy (and wrappers) out of your dog's reach. Candy is not good for dogs - especially chocolate. Problems can range from diarrhea and upset stomach to toxicity and even death.
2. Keep your dog on a leash. Don't leave your dog tied up outside. Keep him inside where it is safe. If you take your dog trick-or-treating, keep him on a short leash and hold it tightly to help keep him from fighting with other animals or biting strangers. Frequently scan the ground for dropped candy that your dog might eat.
3. Make a safe spot for your pet. During trick-or-treating, keep your dog indoors in a separate room that is as far from the front door as possible. This will prevent him from getting spooked by trick-or-treaters and running outside. Give your dog plenty of fresh water, a familiar blanket, and something to take his mind off all the commotion going on in other areas of the house.

PAWS: What Vaccines are Really Needed?
Emailed from Dr. Jon & The Dog Crazy Newsletter...
Some people are under the misconception (or they have been given the wrong information) that when they acquire their puppies or dogs they have already been given all the vaccines they need - for life.
This is NOT true. You would not believe how many puppies I've seen over the years that became sick with some preventable disease. They received some vaccines but not everything that they needed.
Some people are concerned about over-vaccination. Is it possible to over-vaccinate? Yes it is. For those of you that want to know more, I have the perfect article for you.
What Vaccines Does Your Dog REALLY Need? This article will tell you.
Until next time,
Dr. Jon

Avocados and their pits Chives

If you suspect that your four-legged friend has consumed something that has mad them sick, contact your vet or the ASPCA's poison control center at 1-888-426-4435.

PAWS: Encouraging Your Dog To Drink
![]() | TODAY'S PET TIP Encouraging Your Dog to Drink |
Proper hydration is crucial in the healing process; however, the ill or painful dog may not be interested in drinking. It is important NOT to force water into your dog, as it could lead to aspiration pneumonia if your dog is not swallowing appropriately. Listed below are several options to encourage your dog to drink. 1. Give your dog an ice cube to lick. 2. Allow your dog to lick water from your hand or your finger. 3. Feed canned dog food, as it has a higher water content. 4. Add warm water or low-sodium broth to your dog's food. 5. With your veterinarian's permission, offer small amounts of Pedialyte. 6. Adding an ice cube to the water bowl can encourage some dogs to drink. If your dog is weak and not interested in food or water, see your veterinarian. PAWS Alert: Today is National Dog Day!!!
From Dr. Jon...
It's National Dog Day! (There is a holiday for everything, isn't there?) August 26th marks the nation's annual celebration of dogs. It is a way to show public recognition for all of the wonderful things about our dogs and to celebrate their love, companionship, loyalty, patience and their amazing capacity to change our everyday lives.
When I think about dogs, I think about certain moments in my life where a dog has really touched me. There are lots of moments. Times when maybe you are a bit down, having a bad day or just touched by your dog's loyalty and compassion. One dog that I truly loved was "Bones". This dog was a stray mutt - skin and bones when he came to my door. I think he had some German Shepherd in him as well as several other breeds. Anyway, Bones had a way of coming over to you - putting his head on your knee and looking at you with eyes that almost seemed to penetrate your soul. When I would look down into his eyes - I'd melt. How can you not smile and give him a pat - at which he immediately wagged his tail as hard as he could. Do you know what I'm talking about?
