Local Event: Shred those Private Papers

From N&O reporter Sue Stock: Free shredding event Saturday...
The Better Business Bureau is hosting its bi-annual "Secure Your ID" event on Saturday, offering area residents the opportunity to shred secure documents.
On Saturday October 23, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., you can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to the Coastal Federal Credit Union at 1000 St. Albans Drive in Raleigh. They will be shredded on the spot.
If you don't have a shredder at home, this is a really good and important way to protect yourself from identity theft. Personally, I do have a shredder at home and I shred everything I do not want to keep that has my name and address on it. That may seem a little extreme, but I figure better safe than sorry.
Recommended items to bring to the shredding event and dispose of safely include:
  • Documents that include Social Security numbers, birthdates, PIN numbers or passwords
  • Banking documents and other financial information
  • Leases, contracts or letters that include signatures
  • Pre-approved credit card applications
  • Medical or dental bills
  • Travel itineraries
  • Used airline tickets
